With the additional length, you can adjust the amount of frontal weight you are implementing by slightly moving your support point up or down.

The wood
The Hickory (American Walnut) is the wood most used in the manufacture drumsticks by the great resistance to bear blows.  The Hickory is more dense than the maple (about 10%) and less than the Japanese oak (about 10% too).
