The surdos with short depth have their origin in Bahia where the sambists dance with a lot of choreography and where they sometimes raise the surdo on top of their heads. For this reason, a surdo short is lighter and easier to manipulate. It also influences sound as sustain is shorter as it has less snare drum resonance.
